THE SMARTSTILL

Your SmartStill home water distiller is extremely simple to set up and use. Here are a few guidelines and tips on how to get going.

Easy water still

Before first use you can remove any "new" smell from the plastic jug using the following trick: Fill it with warm but not boiling (never use boiling water in the jug!) water, add a tablespoon of baking soda (bicarbonate) and leave overnight. Rinse well next day and then it is ready to go!

Activated carbon filter

Before you assemble the carbon filter with the holder - soak the activated carbon sachet for 5 minutes in very hot water (water from a kettle is fine here). This will activate it and improve adsorption.

Then fold it in half and insert into the plastic nozzle, put the concave top on (make sure it is bulging downwards) and screw on the lid.

Place the whole filter unit on top of the plastic jug and put under the nozzle of the distiller.

If you re-use the filter bag (which is absolutely fine, you can do that 2-3 times) it is imperative that you soak it in near-boiling water first to sterilize it from any bacteria or other organisms.

Filling and starting the distiller

Lift off the whole top from your SmartStill, top up with water to the mark (that is 4 litres). Put the top back on and plug in the distiller to mains power. The fan should go on immediately - if not - press RESET button.

The RESET button will reset the distiller if it has closed down automatically.

Once the distiller is on, you can expect around 1 hour of heating-up time before you see any water dripping. After around 1 hour, the first water will start dripping from the nozzle down into the jug. After that it will take 1-3 hours to distill most of the water (always leave a little in the boiling chamber that holds the contaminants and you don't want to push it so some of them are carried over).

Should the distiller run dry, it will switch itself off and you will need to press the RESET button next time you start it.

Safety advice for distilling

*Place SmartStill on a flat, heat tolerant and waterproof surface.

Ensure good ventilation and no heat sources nearby.

    * Unplug power cord when not in use.

    * Never immerse any SmartStill part in water, keep outside dry.

    * SmartStill is not intended for use by children.

    * Never remove the top when SmartStill is on.

Wait at least 20 minutes after distillation before removing top.

    * Do not pour boiling water into the plastic jug.

    * Do not use SmartStill near open fire, flames or cigarettes.

SmartStill maintenance

*Never use abrasive cleaners or brushes on your SmartStill.

    * Rinse the inside of the boiling chamber after each distillation.

    * Remove deposits in the boiling chamber regularly.

The principle of distillation is to take the alcohol from a solution and leave behind the water and any other impurities. In the process you will end up with pure alcohol in your collection jug and left behind in the still the water and any other unwanted chemicals from your wash (the pre-distilled liquid containing the alcohol).

Home distillers will typically ferment their own wash because that is the most cost effective and enjoyable way to do things.

Fermenting your own wash
First of all you need to decide on a
Turbo Yeast. Some yeasts will produce a stronger Alcohol percentage, around 20%-23%, but with more impurities. Other yeasts will give you a purer wash but at the expense of a lower alcohol percentage, around 14% alcohol.

The equipment needed you'll need a25 Litre Fermenting Vesselwith a tap andAirlockfitted,Thermometer,Hydrometerand aPlastic Mixing Spoon. For ingredients you will need around 6 kilos ofBrewing Sugar(aDextrose Brewing Sugarwould be ideal for a faster, clearer fermentation) and someTurbo Finings(this will turn your cloudy black fermented wash into a nice clear solution ready for your still).

Follow the simple instructions provided with theTurbo Yeast, leave for about a week and add theTurbo Finingsand leave for another 24 hours. Now that you have 25 litres of a strong alcohol wash, it's time to purify it in yourSmartStill.

Distill your wash

Firstly you should read through the manufacturer's instructions and safety manual for yourSmartStill. Remember to put yourSmartRingsinto yourSmartStillfirst. These will stop super heating from occurring in yourSmartStill(please read below the more detailed description about the dangers of super heating). Then set up yourCollection Jugand activecarbon filter attachment(to activate your carbon run under warm water for 45 seconds). Now take 4 liters of your wash into a jug and then pour into yourSmartStill. You must pour in your solution before turning on your still; never pour your solution into a hot still. Once everything is in, turn it on and leave for a couple of hours. It will take about 1 hour for the still to heat up and for the alcohol to start dripping. The first 20ml or so should be discarded as it will contain impurities and bad flavours. The first 700ml will be the best quality; so after you've collected this discard whatever is left. Depending on what yeast you've used you may need to dilute it with water. For example if you've used theTriple Still Yeastyour 700ml should be approx 60% ABV, adding 350ml of water would make it 40% ABV.

All that's left to do now is to add a PRESTIGE flavour essence and leave for a couple of days for the flavourings to bind with your alcohol. Take a look below for our full range of essences!
